Let’s explore what makes the City of Rocks such a great place to climb and how you can make the most of your time there. The Geology of the Area
The City of Rocks is an ancient fault-block mountain range made up of granite rock that dates back over 2 billion years ago. Its unique geologic features create endless opportunities for exploration, whether it be through climbing or hiking. There are even guided tours available to help adventurers learn more about this incredible landscape. The spires are often referred to as “domes” because their shape resembles that of a dome rather than a typical mountain peak - making them ideal for climbing and exploring.

The City of Rocks offers something for climbers of all skill levels - from beginner routes to advanced ones that will keep even experienced climbers challenged. Beginner routes are located on the main walls around Castle Rock and include climbs like “Frogland,” “Tower Rock” and “Coffee Wall.” For intermediate climbers, there are more challenging routes located at Elephant Rock, with climbs such as “Elephant Ear” and “Pennyroyal Wall.” Experienced climbers should head over to Corral Creek or Notch Peak where they can tackle difficult multi-pitch routes like “The Iron Horseman” or “Yellow Bird Directissima.”
